From Bare And Lacking To Ready For Acting: Makeup at Jenks

By Judson Harris

When you’re watching a musical at Jenks, you probably notice the costumes or the set first. The layers of makeup on the actors’ faces typically takes a backseat compared to everything else that’s going on. However, the makeup brings just as much to the characters as their costumes and performances do. The entire process is very time consuming and takes patience, but the end result makes the musical so much better.

Holden Brown, the actor playing Mr. Krabs, gets foundation applied to start off the makeup process.

Contour lines are added to bring out certain aspects of Holden’s face. Shading on areas such as along the jawline and on the cheekbones make those features stand out from a distance.

Highlights are applied, which makes the dark stand out even more.

The blending process starts, making the shading look more natural.

Makeup student Ashley Ololo begins applying red dye, adding a bit of character to Holden's appearance.

The dyeing process is tough due to the makeup student having to make sure that there are no areas where the actor’s natural hair color is showing.

Ashley sprays the hair to make sure the dye won't come off when touched.

A red goatee is added, further accentuating the red that Mr. Krabs is known for.

The finished product. The process of getting your makeup done from start to finish can take up to two hours!
